FAQ

YIKES! Why are your hats so expensive?! I got the one I’m wearing for $100!

Not all hats are the same, down to their quality. Any hat under $300 that isn’t a vintage find is made of wool or mostly wool, and honestly, not made to last. Most cowboy hats you see out there being worn on the daily are like ours, and the price ranges from $300-$1,500. It’s like the difference between a $50 pair of boots and a $500 pair of boots - you get what you pay for.

Aside from quality, our hats are artisan creations. Each piece is made by one guy, in his workshop, by hand. Think of it as a piece of wearable art. Couture. An accessory you pass down to your children or grandchildren - an heirloom.

All this being said, if you really want a hat from us and can’t swing it right now, we can work with you. We’ve offered payment plans, layaway, done vintage reworks… there are options. Shoot us a message and we’ll try and figure something out for ya.

I have an old hat I want fixed up/decorated/personalized/cleaned - can you do this?

We probably can! If the hat is a decent quality (and most older hats are), even if it’s pretty roughed up or misshapen, we can usually work with it. Send us an email or DM via Instagram with some pictures, tell us what you’d like done, and we’ll assess if it’s possible. If it is, we’ll give you a quote, and you can either ship it to us, or bring it by our shop The Gold Dust Collective in San Diego, CA.

Do you ship internationally? I’m not in the US

Yes! We happily ship internationally. Prices can vary depending upon where the package is headed, but we’re always happy to let you know what the shipping costs will be to any country other than the US.

Do you accept returns?

Not on custom orders, no.

For pre made hats and accessories purchased through the website, returns/exchanges are permitted within 7 days of receiving your order. Hats must be unworn, in their original condition, and packaged the same way they were originally shipped.

To process a return, please email us.

What are the hats made of? What’s the difference between wool and fur?

All our hats are made using high grade fur felt bodies, made in the USA. They are the highest quality hat bodies on the market. The difference between wool and fur felts are many, and important. While wool is a wonderful material that is inexpensive, it is not a material that lasts in hat form. It doesn’t do well getting wet, warps easily, doesn’t hold shape over time, and while it is a great choice for someone who wants an inexpensive hat that may last a year or 2, it’s not a good material for creating a high quality hat to last a lifetime. Fur felt is naturally water wicking. It stiffens naturally when worked with, as opposed to wool which needs chemical stiffener. Fur felt hats hold their shape well, and can be reshaped with relative ease, which wool cannot. Overall, fur felt allows us to create a hat that will last a lifetime (and perhaps become generational)

I need a hat next week! Can you do that?

Custom work takes time. Our current lead time for custom orders is 3-4 weeks, but that can vary. We do have a selection of hats that are already made and ready to ship, and often if the size isn’t perfect, if it’s within 1 size up or down of what you need, we can adjust that. Also any slight tweaks - a different hat pin, or an addition of a simple customization like a branding, for example - can be done in a quick timeframe. Just shoot us an email.

I’m an Influencer/photographer/stylist - do you collab?

Yes and no. We LOVE working with photographers and stylists, and we hare happy to loan hats for photoshoots! Just get in touch with details and we can go from there!

Influencers - we appreciate the love, and the work you do as well. That being said, we are a small 2 person operation, and are artisans. Our product is expensive to create, and takes lots of time, which is reflected in the price point. This makes giving product away nearly impossible. We HAVE made a few exceptions, but this is rare. It’s nothing personal. However, we do value the work of influencers and the content you create, so we have a product discount program for influencers who want to collaborate. Shoot us a DM or email, we’ll chat, and if we’re both happy we’ll create a product for you at a discount.

My hat got dirty! What do I do???

Don’t worry! You’ve got options!

Dust and dirt may be removed by brushing the hat with a stiff brush in a counter-clockwise motion on the brim, and in a one way motion (don’t brush back and fourth) on the crown. For crevices, an air compressor can do the trick in little spurts.

Stains and small marks can usually be removed using a fine grit (400-600) sandpaper.

Grease and water stains can be absorbed by sprinkling cornstarch on the affected area and then brushed clean.

For lint, fluff and hair, use a sticky tape to dab and remove the unwanted debris.

And if you’re unsure or worried about doing it yourself, you can send it back to us for a cleaning or, if need be, reworking.

My hat shrunk/warped/got crushed! What do I do?

No worries! Usually in these cases we’d suggest sending it back to us (or taking it to a local hat shop) to be fixed. Just shoot us a message to get the ball rolling.

How do I figure out my hat size?

Hat sizing is foreign to a lot of people, but fairly easy to figure out.

In Order to find out how to measure your head size to find the right hat, you'll need either a sewing tape measure, or a 25" length of string and a ruler. If you have a friend this will make the process easier but it can be done by yourself as well.

Step 1) Take your piece of string or sewing tape measure and start at a point roughly 1/2 to 1 inch above your ears, and then while trying to keep it as level as possible, wrap the string or measure around your head until you come back to your starting point.
Step 2) Be careful to hold on to your end point on the string or sewing tape measure in order to properly mark your head size.
Step 3) For the sewing tape measure, simply correspond your measurement to our hat size chart here.
Step 4) For your length of string, use your ruler to work out how long your length of string measures. We can help translate that into an official hat size, or you can simply let us know your measurements.
